Loose brace, how bad is it?

IT IS NOT BAD. We’ll take care for it.

A brace got loose, what happens?

Brace bothers me and is sliding on the wire : watch video showing how to remove it with a safety pin. Put wax on it to stop it moving until we are in position to remove it. possible to remove it.

I’m bothered by an archwire protruding or moving at the back: watch video showing how to cut it with a nail clipper. See nearest general dentist who will be in a position to cut it with his instrumentation.

I was supposed to wear an elastic on the loose brace : attach elastic on closest tooth and stay vigilant regarding the movement of the teeth. In case not being sure, stop wearing elastic (as well as other elastics worn on other teeth).

The tooth where the brace was bonded is getting disaligned: watch howto remove elastic chain with with a hair pleazer. Howerver, don’t worry: the tooth will take same amount of time to realign as to get disaligned. Everything will go back to normal quickly.

In any case: let us know as soon as possible and BRUSH THE GUM AROUND LOOSE BRACE.

Impact on treatment?

Sometimes there’s no impact : if tooth is already well alligned it was just serving as a secondary force application point, not needed in force system. We do not rebond the brace, we just leave it as it is until end of treatment, or until really needed.

Sometimes very little : we bonded a brace on a little erupted tooth, bonding conditions were not ideal. Until bonding conditions improve, it’s useless to rebond. We wait( technical limits).

Sometimes a lot : if it’s a tooth on full traction (getting aligned, especially impacted tooth) or if it alters force system (elastic chains, elastics).

In this case don’t panic : rebonding it it straight away in the same manner is impossible. Not because the patient is not at  our dental clinic, but because bonding follows physical rules and has specific requirements.

No rush, unwanted movements will leave as quickly as they came!

THERE’S NO NEED TO COME TO DENTAL OFFICE STRAIGHT AWAY.

Bonding on teeth, how does that work?

1/ All bonding systems currently used by orthodontists contain fluor, but are also hydrophobic, that means they do not work if there’s too much humidity.

A shame, because mouth is mainly humid: saliva, blood.

This constrains the patient: having non bleeding gum while bonding gums and accomodate a cheek expander and a saliva extractor.

THEREFORE REBONDING A BRACE IS IMPOSSIBLE IF GUMS ARE UNHEALTHY AND BLEED WHEN YOU BRUSH around relevant tooth. So please massage your gum when you brush to make it firm before any rebonding appointment.

2/ All our bonding materials take 12 to 24 hours to get 100% hardWhen we harden the glue used for bonding braces with a LED lamp, it hardens up to 90%. Therefore, it’s risky to pull too hard on a newly rebounded brace. At times, we might check in with the patient 2 weeks later to complete activation.
